Currently, 1,288 schools are operating in the country, enrolling 1.362 million children. 85 new schools were approved in December 2024, and now approval has been granted to open 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Good news! If you're looking for a school for your child or are worried about quality education, breathe a sigh of relief. A cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the opening of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across the country. These schools will not only provide quality education but also give wings to the dreams of millions of children. A budget of ₹5,862 crore has been announced for this, which will be spent over the next nine years.
How much will be spent on what?
₹2,585 crore will be spent on buildings and infrastructure. This means that modern classrooms, labs, and playgrounds will all be built. Additionally, ₹3,277 crore will be spent on teacher salaries and books. These schools will be "Adarsh Vidyalayas" (model schools) as per the National Educational Research and Training Program (NEP) 2020. For the first time, Balvatika (for children aged 3-6) will be included. These schools will focus on learning through play, fostering creativity, and other activities.
Where will these schools open?
It is worth noting that the demand for Kendriya Vidyalayas is high. Currently, there are 1,288 schools operating in the country, serving 1.362 million children. In December 2024, 85 new schools were approved, and now, approval has been given to open 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas.
20 schools: In districts that never had a Kendriya Vidyalaya.
14 schools: In aspirational districts, where the pace of development is slow.
4 schools: In Naxal-affected areas.
5 schools: In the Northeast and hilly regions.
A total of 57 schools will be opened in 17 states and union territories. This scheme, which has been in operation since 1962, was started for the children of central government employees, the military, and paramilitary personnel, but now every child is benefiting.
How much will the benefit be?
Students' seats: Each school will have 1,520 seats, enabling a total of 86,640 children to study.
Job explosion: The 57 schools will create 4,617 permanent positions for teachers and staff. Additionally, thousands of people will be employed to build the schools.
Excellent results: CBSE scores in Kendriya Vidyalayas are consistently excellent. They also offer modern teaching and facilities. This is why 913 schools have already received the PM SHRI tag.
Why is this decision considered a game-changer?
This is a step to strengthen NEP 2020. These schools will also include multi-language, vocational skills, holistic growth, etc. Indeed, the focus on education has increased after the Covid pandemic, and this step will provide progress in this direction.
