Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2025: The festival of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) of the month of Kartika. This day is considered sacred for the combined worship of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. It is customary to worship Hari (Vishnu) and Har (Shiva) on this day. According to scriptures, devotees who worship Lord Vishnu on this day attain heavenly bliss and, at the end of their lives, attain a place in Vaikuntha Dham, the abode of Lord Hari. This year, the festival will be celebrated on October 4th.
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi Puja Method
On this day, one should wake up in the Brahma Muhurta (early morning) and bathe in the Ganges or any other holy river. After bathing, the idols of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are installed together and anointed with Panchamrit (five nectar). Aarti is performed with Tulsi leaves, lotus flowers, incense, lamps, and naivedya. Chanting the mantras "Om Namo Narayanaya" and "Om Namah Shivaya" is especially fruitful. Lighting a lamp at night and listening to the story of Hari-Har brings special merit. Devotees observing the fast should fast throughout the day and eat fruits in the evening.
The Story of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi
According to mythological belief, Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the universe, once visited Kashi to worship the Supreme God, Mahadev. He bathed at Manikarnika Ghat and resolved to worship Shiva with 1,000 golden lotuses. During the worship, Lord Shiva reduced one golden lotus to test him. Vishnu is known as "Pundarikaksha" and "Kamalnayan." When he realized that he lacked a flower, he decided to offer his lotus-like eyes.
Pleased with Vishnu's incomparable devotion, Mahadev appeared and said, "From today, this date will be called Vaikuntha Chaturdashi. Any devotee who worships you with devotion on this day will attain Vaikuntha."
The Gift of the Sudarshan Chakra
Pleased with Vishnu's devotion, Mahadev presented him with the Sudarshan Chakra, whose radiance was like that of millions of suns. According to another legend, on this very day, Lord Vishnu ordered his gatekeepers, Jai and Vijay, to open the gates of Vaikuntha to everyone. Anyone who observes a fast and worships Hari and Har on this day is freed from the tortures of Yamaloka, is freed from their fourteen thousand sins, and ultimately attains salvation.
