The One Show was paused for a "heartbreaking" death announcement on Monday (September 15) as the hosts paid tribute.

During today's edition of the popular BBC show, Alex Jones and Roman Kemp chatted with guests Ed Sheeran, Paddy McGuinness and Vernon Kay.

As the programme drew to a close, Roman delivered a devastating announcement about boxer Ricky Hatton's death after the former world champion was discovered dead at his Manchester home on Sunday. He was 46 years old.

"Very quickly before we go, there was some sad news over the weekend that former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton had passed away," Roman began.

"So many people have been sharing their memories of him," reports Wales Online.

Paddy then reflected on his own memories of Ricky, explaining: "It's obviously shocking news and my heart goes out to all Ricky's family. I think everyone's saying the same thing, he was a man of the people.

"What I loved about Rick was, even in his heyday when we were out in Vegas when he were fighting Mayweather and he's mixing with the likes of Tom Cruise and David Beckham and Brad Pitt, but he still made sure me and my mates got in to see him.

"The day after, he made a fuss of them. So, I always remember how he was with my friends and he didn't have to be like that with them."

Paddy finished by saying: "He was just an absolute diamond. It's heartbreaking."

Alex then shared: "Our thoughts are with Ricky's friends and family, and you can find more lovely tributes to Ricky over on the BBC Sport pages, which looks back at his incredible life and everything he achieved both inside and outside of the ring."

Roman concluded: "And you can listen to a special tribute to him tonight at 9pm on BBC Radio 5 Live with Mark Chapman."

Ricky's family have since honoured the star in a statement, saying: "He had a heart as big as his smile, and his kindness, humour and loyalty touched everyone who was lucky enough to know him.

"As a family, our loss is immeasurable, and words cannot truly capture the pain we feel. Yet in the midst of our grief, we have been deeply moved by the overwhelming outpouring of love and support.

"Richard's memory will forever remain in our hearts, in the hearts of his fans, and in the sport he loved so dearly."

The statement concluded: "At this time, we kindly ask for privacy as we come to terms with life without him. In the days and weeks ahead, we will take strength from one another and from the knowledge that Richard's legacy - both in boxing and as a man - will continue to live on."

Ricky, who triumphed in 45 of his 48 professional bouts during his 15-year career, was world champion at light-welterweight and welterweight. He last fought professionally in 2012, before taking part in the 16th series of Dancing on Ice last year.

The One Show airs weeknights on BBC One at 7pm
