Golden Globe winning Hollywood legend Sally Kirkland has died at the 84, just a day after it was confirmed she had entered hospice care in Palm Springs, California amidst a dementia battle. The news was confirmed by her representative Michael Greene. Prior to her death Sally, who appeared as a character called Lonnie in a 1979 episode of the original Charlie's Angels, had been struggling with "two separate life-threatening conditions", according to a GoFundMe page recently set up by her friends to raise money for "urgent medical care". The fundraising page revealed that the Golden Globe Award winner had "fractured her four bones in her neck, right wrist, and her left hip" in the past year.
A statement on the page read: "Today, she finds herself facing a significant health crisis - one that has not only affected her well-being but also requires urgent and quality medical care that she can no longer afford. This past year, Sally fractured her four bones in her neck, right wrist, and her left hip. While recovering, she developed two separate life-threatening infections.
"The combination of these injuries and infections have required extensive hospitalisations and rehab beyond the 100 days insurance will cover. As the days pass, lack of proper care greatly diminishes Sally's chance of a full recovery. However, with the right medical support, we know she has a strong chance of overcoming this setback and returning to the work she loves.
"We are humbly asking for your support, in any amount you can offer, to ensure she gets the treatment she needs at this crucial time in her health journey. Every donation, no matter the size, will help bring her one step closer to recovery and, we hope, back to doing what she loves most-acting."
Sally began her career in the 1960s and appeared in more than 250 film and television productions over the decades including roles in popular shows such as The Incredible Hulk, Starsky & Hutch and Falcon Crest.
Her performance as a former popular actress in the 1987 independent comedy-drama Anna earned her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama). She also garnered an Oscar nomination. However she lost out to Cher who picked up the gong for her performance in Moonstruck.
Tributes flooded in for the star as news of her death broke. "Devastated to hear of Sally Kirkland's passing. She was an indelible character actor and red carpet icon who was never anything short of memorable. Her awards season campaign for ANNA, a powerhouse performance all should see, will always be the greatest," one fan penned on X.
"When Sally Kirkland won the Golden Globe she said, 'Plot twist: I actually am the movie.' RIP to the queen of unexpected cameos, avant-garde vibe & every wild character that ever said 'Did she just say that?!' Gone to script that next scene in the sky," another wrote.
A third chimed in: "Rest in peace. Underrated actress, probably because she was a bit always quirky."
Meanwhile a fourth observed: "All the stars are slowly going out. Soon we will be left with only celebrities. And there is a difference. RIP."
