As the summer crowds begin to thin across Europe, one small Greek island is quietly drawing attention for offering all the highlights of the country's most famous destinations, without the chaos or cost. Skiathos, part of the Sporades archipelago, is now being tipped as a late-summer alternative to Mykonos or Corfu, with temperatures staying as high as 26C well into September.
Often overshadowed by the more commercialised islands of the Cyclades, Skiathos has remained under the radar for many international travellers. However, its showstopper beaches, vivid turquoise waters, and lively but manageable nightlife are helping it gain a strong reputation as one of Greece's most appealing hidden gems.
September sees the island in what many locals consider its best form: sunny, warm, and far less crowded yet still full of energy.
Daytime highs average between 21C and 26C, making it perfect for beach days, boat trips, or exploring the island's scenic trails without the peak-season heat.
The island's international fame was cemented in 2008, when it was chosen as one of the filming locations for the Hollywood hit "Mamma Mia!", starring Meryl Streep and inspired by ABBA's music.
While neighbouring Skopelos hosted most of the church scenes, Skiathos featured prominently in the movie's harbour and coastal sequences.
Since then, it has steadily grown in popularity, though it remains far less developed than islands like Santorini or Mykonos.

Skiathos offers over 60 beaches, including Koukounaries, often ranked among Greece's finest.
The lush landscape, with dense pine forests running down to the sea, gives it a more verdant appearance than the rocky terrain of the Cyclades.
Visitors also praise the compact yet buzzing Old Town, where cobbled lanes, traditional tavernas, and harbourside bars provide a vibrant evening atmosphere.
There are regular direct flights from the UK and mainland Europe throughout the summer and early autumn months, making it accessible for short breaks or longer stays.
With lower prices, fewer crowds, and warm weather into October, Skiathos is becoming an increasingly popular choice for those seeking a more relaxed Greek island experience.
