Cody Rhodes will face John Cena for the SummerSlam main event. Rhodes won the King of the Ring recently. He issued a challenge for the Undisputed World Champion during the SmackDown episode of July 4, 2025. Rhodes’ mentor, Randy Orton, made an appearance as well. Orton urged Rhodes to kick John Cena’s a*s at SummerSlam 2025. The event is scheduled for August 2-3, 2025.

Cena defeated Rhodes to become the Undisputed World Champion. The SmackDown episode kicked off with Rhodes’ appearance. The wrestler celebrated his recent win. Holding the crown of King of the Ring. Rhodes stated, “So what does this crown stand for? I left a piece of myself in Columbus, Ohio, fighting Jey Uso, just to hold this. I left a piece of myself in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, wrestling my mentor Randy Orton, just to hold this. And what does it stand for.” The King of the Ring Champion continued, “It stands for where we have been. It stands for where we are going. Where we have been: past kings like Booker T, Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Triple H.”
Rhodes announced his next target, “And it stands for where we are going. The main event of SummerSlam, myself, The King of the Ring against the Undisputed WWE Champion, John Cena.”
The crowd went wild with the callout. The segment was joined by Randy Orton. He asked for a promise from Rhodes.

I was about to rearrange your skull brother. But i hesitated. You didn’t hesitate. You pulled the trigger. And for that I respect you.” Orton continued, “But there is one thing that I ask of you. In fact I want you to promise me Cody. Promise me that you will not squander this opportunity. Promise me that you will go to SummerSlam and kick John Cena’s as*”
This will be the chance for Rhodes to earn back the title. The SummerSlam main event will also be the redemption for the wrestler’s debacle at WrestleMania 41. For the first time, SummerSlam will be held as a 2-night PLE at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 2nd and 3rd of August 2025
